If you know online gambling, whether that’s sports, poker, casino – anything: you’ll know about affiliates, or at least have heard of it, you might even have joined a website through one or own one yourself!
Coming into effect on October 2nd
2017, Sky Betting & Gaming will cease their affiliate marketing program that has given them so much success for so many years.
Citing reasons as “growing regulatory concerns”, the media and betting behemoth has made this decision following various strategic and analytical reviews of their business and their presence in abidance with ever-changing regulatory requirements and licensing requirements across the industry and all across the world.
The most shocking element of this decision is the sheer popularity and power that affiliates and the programmes have with their social media presence, new customer draw and the reach and power they have – over the next few weeks a plethora of websites all over the world will start removing banners, adverts, odds citations and video messages all relating to Sky Betting & Gaming in preparation for this huge change.
Lets talk about facts, and what has prompted this from Sky.
The Affiliates sector is being brushed with a fine point recently by gambling commissions over suspicions, well supported ones, about affiliate behaviour in relation to general and company specific gambling laws and rules. There have been claims from operators, former affiliate members and declined affiliate programmers about the potentially dubious practices going on with both sides of the programs, and this has prompted Sky to remove all elements of Affiliates from their product.
A spokesperson for Sky Betting & Gaming said:
"Following a comprehensive strategic review, Sky Betting & Gaming has decided to close its UK affiliate programme. This difficult decision has been taken to give us more control of our marketing outputs and standards to ensure we can continue to meet the changing regulatory requirements in our sector.
"We've notified all the companies that will be affected by this decision and would like to sincerely thank them for all their support and hard work in helping to grow and promote Sky Betting & Gaming’s brands since we launched in 2000.
"We'll continue to work with our affiliates for the next 30 days, and a dedicated team is in place to respond to all inquiries."
