The main gimmick of this game is your choice between two different expanding wild symbols. We’ll expand on this in the Game Symbols section, but we must also note that this game has 16 paylines, and a staggered layout of 4, 5, 5, and 4 rows by four reels.
Dragon vs Phoenix RTP and Volatility
This game’s average RTP is 95.06%. But the provider indicates that the RTP can also get as low as 92.05%. So be aware of that, because such low RTP figures will make it harder to win.
The volatility of Dragon vs Phoenix has been rated as medium, which means that you might get some cold streaks here and there, but you won’t wait that long for a hit. In turn, your wins will be average - not large, but not too small either. That being said, thrill-seekers definitely have something to hope for at this game.
Theme
Dragon vs Phoenix takes inspiration from Chinese mythology, and, in addition to the titular characters, you’ll see gemstones, Feng Shui coins, lanterns, golden helmets, fireworks, and other thematic items as the symbols. On top of that, the music and sound effects are distinctly Eastern, completely immersing you in the gameplay.
It’s hard to ignore how attractive the art is. The background image is gorgeous, and the symbols are meticulously detailed. And, when you hit a Dragon or Phoenix symbol, the animations are incredibly smooth and eye-catching. Overall, this is a pleasant game to play. Not just because of its exciting gameplay, but also by the virtue of it being plain beautiful.
Dragon vs Phoenix has three special symbols; two different wilds and a scatter. The catch here is that you can activate only one wild symbol at a time. You can do that by picking either Dragon or Phoenix icon above the reels. Each of them behaves differently, so it’s up to you to decide how you want to play.
Dragon: This expanding wild will appear on the first or fourth reel, and it will transform every symbol (except Scatter) that’s in those reels into a wild. Each of these wilds will then act as any symbol, allowing you to fill winning paylines easier.
Phoenix: If you have chosen this as your expanding wild, it will instead appear only on the second and third reel. When you land a Phoenix, it will expand into a 2x2 square to convert each nearby symbol into a wild.
Fireworks: It’s the scatter. See what they did there? Because fireworks… scatter. In any case, if you get three or four of these symbols, you’ll receive free spins.
Besides these special symbols the game features the low-paying gems symbols and the high-paying helmet, coins, lantern, scroll of paper, and a bottle with blue potion.
Mobile Compatibility
The game is built entirely on HTML5, which makes it compatible with any modern web browser, whether it’s on desktop or mobile. If you have an iPhone or Android device, you can play Dragon vs Phoenix wherever you want.
In fact, its vertical reel layout is perfectly suited for smartphone screens, and the controls automatically adapt to the screen size. Tom Horn Gaming has taken extra care when designing this game for mobile users, and we commend them for that.

Bonus Rounds & Free Spins
Dragon vs Phoenix has only one type of bonus round. While we wish this game also had other extra features such as Gamble, the free spins provide plenty to look forward to.
Free Spins
If you get three scatter symbols anywhere on the reels, you will get five free spins, but four of them will get you seven free spins. These free spins can’t be retriggered during the bonus round, and it will end once you’ve run out of them.
During the free spins, both of the expanding wilds, Dragon and Phoenix, are active regardless of which of them you have chosen. At the end of the bonus round, all your winnings will be collected and added to your balance.
Dragon vs Phoenix Demo Play
Max Win
However, you have to get astronomical amounts of luck to get it. Basically, the highest paying symbol, the golden helmet, has a multiplier of 100x if you land four of them.
To get the max win, you have to land four scatter symbols, and then, during the seven free spins, you must get four golden helmets on all paylines every single time. It’s such an improbable event that it’s more reasonable to simply hope for a solid win during the regular spins or the bonus round.
Overall Rating
The signature feature of Dragon vs Phoenix, obviously, is the choice between the two different expanding wilds symbols, and we thought it added a neat bit of interactivity and player input to the otherwise randomized slot gameplay.
Of course, we wish that the game had a higher RTP and that it had a more varied selection of bonus rounds, not just the plain old free spins. But, overall, it’s a smooth and well-polished game that attracts your attention with its incredible art and keeps you playing with its entertaining gameplay.

The best part of the slot is that you can choose type of active wild: dragon of phoenix. My pick is Phoenix Mega Wild (2x2). IMO it’s much better than 1x3 expanded wild, as I just win more with 2x2.
FS is nothing special, and most times I win under x20 over 5 free fames. But if you somehow land two wilds…Then some magic can happen.
